Joseph L. Kingcannon, Sr., affectionately known as “Uncle Joe,” “Uncle G-Dog,” and “Supa,” age 69, was born on November 10, 1956. He was the sixth child and a twin, born to the late Elder Louis Kingcannon and Emma Lou Todd Kingcannon. Joseph departed this life on the evening of September 15, 2026, at home surrounded by his family.
Joseph was educated in Topeka USD 501 and graduated from Highland Park High School with the Class of 2005. Growing up, Joseph was well known for playing sports, including football, baseball, and basketball, and for being a Golden Gloves boxer at the Topeka Boys & Girls Club, coached and trained by Big Joe Davis and Coach Woody. Joseph received multiple medals and trophies from having numerous wins and knockouts. His favorite sport was basketball, where he loved playing pickup ball and 21 (“booty green”) with his family and friends.
Joseph was employed at numerous jobs within Topeka, Kansas. His last job was at Cardinals, where he was a manager of janitorial services for years until his health started failing.
Joseph accepted Christ into his life at a young age and was a faithful member and musician of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. McCoy Caraway. Joseph had a love for praising God, singing, and playing bass and lead guitar. He dedicated his time to multiple groups around the city, including the St. Luke Male Chorus, Topeka Travelers, The Topeka Hummingbirds, Gospel Wonders, The Sensational Harmony Kings, where he recorded an album playing bass, The Kingcannon Gospel Singers, and Heaven Bound.
Joseph was also able to spread his talent within his own family, teaching vocals and training some of the top bass players in the city of Topeka, including his brother, Emmanuel “Manny” Kingcannon; his nephew, Tony Barksdale; and his one and only son, Joseph “Lil Joe” Kingcannon, Jr. After teaching them bass, Joseph transitioned to playing guitar. Joseph also had a talent with drums, where his sister, Annabell “Annie” Kingcannon (RIP), and his daughter, Corine Kingcannon, played beside him.
On May 13, 1989, Joseph united in marriage to his forever love, Marsha Kingcannon. They remained inseparable throughout their life together. His love for his wife was unconditional. Where one went, you would see the other. Joseph truly loved God, his wife, his family, and his grandkids. He loved reading the Bible, cleaning cars while listening to quartet music, drawing, playing catch with his grandkids, and watching sports.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Elder Louis Kingcannon and Emma Lou Todd Kingcannon; his sisters, Mae “Mary” Rose Durant (his twin), Carol Kingcannon (Hawthorne), Sharon Kingcannon (Jackson), Annabell Kingcannon, and Emma Lou “Emmie” Kingcannon-Cushinberry; and his brother, David Kingcannon.
Left to cherish his life is his devoted wife, Marsha Kingcannon; his children, Ivory Carroll (Antonio), Billie Anderson, Corine Kingcannon, and Joseph Kingcannon, Jr.; his brothers, Emmanuel Kingcannon (Connie) and Cornelius Kingcannon (Jennifer); his sisters, Marvena Barksdale and Debra Barksdale; his stepsister, Mary Louise-Jones; his 11 grandkids, Daniel Sanders, Jr., Valiea Sanders, Holadai Wiseman, Jonathan Young, Jr., Kazaria Wiseman, Jayden Young, Joseph “Jojo” Kingcannon III, Kevin Kingcannon, Antonio “Cash” Carroll, Jr., Ar’Mon Hoggan, and Serenity Caraway; his great-grandson, Ja’sai Irons; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The love, strength, and faith Joseph exhibited will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
